Comparing Slim Lipo & Smart Lipo for Fat Loss
Laser lipo is a great alternative to traditional liposuction treatment for those who struggle with unwanted body fat. There are many brands of laser lipo on the market, with two of the most popular being Slim Lipo and Smart Lipo. Both are effective, minimally invasive fat removal techniques that can break down and remove fat cells efficiently. But there are some important differences.
In this article the fat loss experts at Aurora Medi Spa in East Lansing, MI explain the differences between Slim Lipo and Smart Lipo so that you can determine the treatment that is best for you.
Understanding Laser Lipo for Fat Loss
Laser lipo is one of the most popular methods of fat loss in East Lansing, and across the country. It is a minimally invasive procedure offering spectacular body sculpting and shaping results. Both Smart Lipo and the newer Slim Lipo are forms of laser liposuction. The laser energy targets the fatty deposits and heats up the fat cells so that they are broken down and destroyed. The liquefied fat is then suctioned out using a liposuction cannula, which is a small suction tube.
It typically only takes one laser lipo treatment to obtain the desired fat loss results. Laser lipo also offers much less bruising and discomfort than other traditional forms of liposuction. Laser liposuction can be used on both the face and body, but our East Lansing patients most frequently request laser lipo for sculpting the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, chin, and neck.
Laser lipo sessions usually last between 2-3 hours, depending upon the number and size of areas being treated for fat loss. Although laser lipo can achieve measurable inch loss, this is not a weight loss method – and is always best when supported with a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine. Consequently, this treatment is not recommended for people who are substantially overweight.
Slim Lipo for Fat Loss
Slim Lipo is an amazing laser assisted liposuction technology that removes fat and simultaneously tightens the skin. One of the main benefits of Slim Lipo is that the treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure using “tumescent anesthesia” – which involves the administration of fluid containing a numbing substance (such as lidocaine). Patients remain awake during the session which minimizes recovery time.
The Slim Lipo fat loss treatment emits two wavelengths of laser light which are inserted through very tiny incisions. Slim Lipo has wavelengths that will simultaneously efficiently melt fat while it also tightens the skin. Many patients realize an improvement in the smoothness and tightness of the skin almost immediately after Slim Lipo, once the swelling subsides. This firming of the skin is continued for up to 6 months after treatment.
Smart Lipo for Fat Loss
Another body contouring option is Smart Lipo. In this treatment, the laser is very effectively used to melt away unwanted body fat and tighten the skin. Smart Lipo, which is manufactured by Cynosure Smart Lipo, is also commonly performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is made to allow the laser to be inserted under the skin. This procedure is very commonly used on the hips, love handles, abdomen, thighs, or upper arms.
Smart Lipo vs. Slim Lipo for Fat Loss
The primary differences between these two procedures is their laser wavelength capabilities, and the shape of the device’s hand pieces. Smart Lipo is an older technology. The device used is a large metal wand which uses a high wavelength which is 1064. However, Slim Lipo use a newer technology which uses a smaller device and two dedicated wavelengths: 924 for targeting fat cells and 975 for tightening skin tissue.
In general, Smart Lipo often works less effectively because of its larger size and single wavelength.
The smaller Slim Lipo handpiece offers more freedom of movement to the expert who uses the device – and more precise and refined body sculpting and fat removal – even in small areas of the body. Slim Lipo also offers a variety of interchangeable tips which makes the laser able to access small areas of the body that may be hard to reach. The Smart Lipo fiber optic laser has a less flexible design, and is not able to get to easily access these areas.
Additionally, the high temperature created by the increased wavelength in the Smart Lipo poses a risk of burning the tissues around the fat. While the gentler, but equally effective, dual lasers of the Slim Lipo technology pose no risk of burns or overheating.
Recovery periods also differ with each of these treatments. Patients undergoing Smart Lipo generally report experiencing some soreness and discomfort immediately following treatment which can keep them from their normal activities for 3-5 days. However, the recovery period with Slim Lipo is very minimal with most patients returning to work the following day.
